Some key points with regards to protecting yourself against the heat and cold. The cap should have some form of rigid, adequately large visor, with a cord for retaining it in use – particularly in fresh winds.
Don`t forget to take a spare cap with you!
Even when sailing in summer, the nights can feel chilly on the sea; a jersey or light polar lining is essential as the loss of body heat when sailing can be very difficult to recuperate.
A thermal vest will also help to counteract the cold.
Rain and dampness are relentless: even in summer, to feel wet whilst sailing is unpleasant. A waterproof jacket and trousers will improve your quality of life on board.
It is important that waterproof clothing is comfortable without restriction to movement - and breathable, with the stitching sealed and the cuffs adjustable.
Footwear needs to be light (agile), breathable, with anti –slip soles that will not leave marks – essential please!
The classic sailing moccasins are ideal for sailing and normal wear. Alternatively, quick drying sport shoes or trainers designed specifically for sailing are ideal.
If the intention is to sail or learn to sail, a pair of sailing gloves is an important item of equipment.
Halyards, sheets and mooring lines are very abrasive and can damage hands if frequent work is done without gloves. Sailing gloves are available with normal length fingers and thumbs or part length where finger ends are exposed for fine work.
In summer it is essential to protect and moisturise the skin before and during sailing due to the reflection of the sun on the water.
Necessary protection factor depends on an individual’s type of skin: ask at your local chemist for advice.
